DU admission test

Dhaka University (DU) is one of the most prestigious institutions in Bangladesh, and it’s A Unit admission test is specifically designed for HSC students from the science stream.

The exam is taken with 100 marks questions. There are MCQ and written sections in one questions paper.

The MCQ part of the A Unit admission test is worth 60 marks, consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions. Each MCQ carries 1 mark, with a negative marking scheme in place where 0.25 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer.


The written part of the test accounts for 40 marks. In this section, each question carries 2.5 marks, and unlike the MCQ section, there is no negative marking.

  • In Dhaka university admission test, the competition is getting tougher every year. The questions are definitely harder than they used to be, so you need to be well-prepared and understand your subjects deeply.
  • In physics, most of the MCQs are based on formulas and concepts. You’ll need to understand the relationships between different physical quantities and formulas.
    There are some theoretical questions, but many require basic mathematical calculations. Though, calculators aren’t allowed, but you can solve all the questions without one.
    Still, we’ll suggest you to practise scientific calculations to be more efficient.
  • Chemistry questions are mostly theoretical and concept-based, but they can be tricky.
    You need to read them carefully to avoid making silly mistakes. Organic chemistry is heavily featured, so make sure you have a solid grasp of it.
  • The mathematics questions are the toughest part. They’ve been really tricky and time-consuming for the last few years.
    Some questions are lengthy and can eat up a lot of your time, so it’s best to skip these if you’re pressed for time.
    About 25% of the questions are outside the short syllabus. If you’re not confident about those chapters, it’s better to avoid them.
  • Biology MCQs are generally easier and more straightforward. About 30% of the questions come from previous university question banks.
    There’s a strong emphasis on botany over zoology, so focus more on that.
  • For Bangla, most questions are theoretical and from grammar. If you practice previous questions, you’ll find many common ones in the exam.
  • The English section is quite tricky. The questions are at the same level as BCS and medical exams. Practicing BCS questions can really help you perform better in this section.
  • Passing Marks and Evaluation
    One crucial thing to remember is that “you have to pass each subject and get at least 31 marks overall
    to have your written answers evaluated.
    If you score below that, your written part won’t even be looked at, and you’ll be considered failed. So, aim to clear that threshold.

  • Physics
    In the written section, physics questions are valued at 2.5 marks each.
    Physics questions typically require 2 to 3 steps to solve, with a mix of tricky and lengthy problems.
    Although these can be solved without a calculator, it will be better for you to have enough practice with scientific hand calculation.
  • Chemisty
    Chemistry questions often comprise 2 to 4 theoretical sub-questions within a single item, all related to the same topic or chapter.
    This structure ensures that answering comprehensively can earn you the full 2.5 marks.
    Organic chemistry is the most important chapter for written questions.
    We’ve found a trend of including organic chemistry reaction changes and important concept in last 4 years DU admission questions.
  • Mathematics
    The mathematics section have tricky and lengthy questions. Calculus is the most important for math written part. Some math problems contain concepts from various chapters.
  • Biology
    While the biology MCQs are generally straightforward, the written part requires detailed explanations of common theories and concepts.
    The questions asks for explanation and comparisons, that’s why it takes so much time to answer. Many students claimed that they got proper mark for writing the main points only. They saved time by avoiding larger explanation.
  • Bangla
    The Bangla section predominantly features grammar questions and requires writing paragraphs on specified topics and concepts. Maximum questions are from grammar. Every year we’ve seen a paragraph writing question for a specific topic.
  • English
    Similarly, the English section involves paragraph writing and grammar questions. Proficiency in English grammar and composition is crucial for achieving high scores.

Should You Study the Full Syllabus or Short Syllabus for DU Admission Test?

Since the 2020 pandemic, HSC exams have been conducted using a short syllabus. However, admission tests, including those at Dhaka University, often cover topics from the full syllabus. An analysis of the last four years’ DU admission test questions reveals that they are based on the full syllabus.

Some students have claimed that they got chance even they prepared with only the short syllabus. They found that 60% to 70% of the questions were from the short syllabus and were able to carefully answer those.

But we recommend admission candidates to prepare with full syllabus to be risk free and get higher rank.
